It's Spring at Cedar Hill! 5/1/09
The Hummingbirds and Rose Breasted Grosbeaks have returned. The carpenter bees are also making their annual spring visit -- good thing they are so cute. The redbuds and purple and white Iris are blooming. We have a new addition to Cedar Hill -— a vegetable garden.
We have lettuce, peas and onions, beets, spinach, and turnips as well as red potatoes and white potatoes planted, and growing. I have a bazillion baby tomato plants all over the cabin on top of the hill and in the dining room at the retreat house. We will have fresh produce, grown very locally, all summer at Cedar Hill.
Another addition in progress is a 12' x 15' butterfly garden dedicated to the memory of Maryagnes Little. It is situated across the drive so people might enjoy it while sitting on the side porch or in the dining room. These all-Kentucky native plants will go into the prepared bed during our May work days. The butterfly garden bed is a compost garden. It is made up of layers of straw, shredded paper, peat moss, and soil, on a foundation of cardboard. It’s a raised bed that is useful when the soil is poor and rocky.
